Welcome to the Nursery!
Here at Silloth Primary school, we pride ourselves on offering a bespoke curriculum and tailored provision starting from what we know about our children and what they need in their next stage of learning.
Our philosophy
Early childhood is the foundation on which children build the rest of their lives. We value the importance that the EYFS plays in laying secure foundations for future learning and development.
However, we also believe that early childhood is valid in itself as part of life. It is important to view the EYFS as preparation for life and not simply preparation for the next stage of education.
Our Aims
At Silloth Primary we aim to provide the highest quality care and education for all our children thereby giving them a strong foundation for their future learning. We create a safe and happy environment with motivating and enjoyable learning experiences that enable all children to become confident and independent learners.
Children are fully supported by caring and knowledgeable professionals who scaffold children’s development through adult-led play, in a language-rich and nurturing environment. We place the utmost importance on speech & language development which underpins all we do.
We value the individual child and develop strong and caring relationships with parents and carers to meet their needs and help every child to reach their full potential.
As outlined in the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2021,
“Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances.”
We adhere to the Statutory Framework of the EYFS and the four guiding principles that shapes our practice within Early Years settings.
- Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured
- Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
- Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers.
- Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates.

We are full of curiosity, awe and wonder! We are always exploring and achieving through play.
Nursery is led by Miss Butler (Class teacher and EYFS Leader) supported by HLTA Miss James and TA Miss Agnew.
Our Nursery Class runs the following session times;
Monday -Friday
Morning session: 8 .30am -11.30am (3hours)
Children can also attend lunch club until 12.30pm if they would like to add this onto their morning session (a small fee if not in receipt of 30 hours code)
A typical session contains a mix of the following
- child initiated play with free flow indoor/outdoor play
- adult initiated activity
- targeted interactions in play
- Whole class structured story time
- Songs and rhymes
- Squiggle/dough disco
Key workers
It is an EYFS requirement to assign each child a key person. The EYFS Statutory Framework states..
“Each child must be assigned a key person. Their role is to help ensure that every child’s care is tailored to meet their individual needs, to help the child become familiar with the setting, offer a settled relationship for the child and build a relationship with their parents and/or carers. They should also help families engage with more specialist support if appropriate.”
In our Nursery, the Teacher is the key person for the N2 children and the TA is the keyworker for the N1 children who join in January and April.
